As a Chinese, born in Japan, and raised in New York, her cross-cultural identity has been infused in all areas of her creative endeavors. She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and Goldsmiths College. In 2015, she published her memoir When You Make No Art, about growing up in museums, published as an art book in English and widely distributed in art bookstores. The book has been translated into Chinese as 可不可以不艺术 and published by Imaginst Press in China. In 2016 she founded Special Special, a shop, gallery, and a creative platform. As the director, she has produced over 40 unique collaborations with artists and makers with projects in New York, Shanghai, Taipei, and Macau. Special Special operated from an East Village storefront from 2016 to 2022, and after the closure of the space, A Small Pond Under the Blue Sky was published to commemorate the projects realized during those years. In 2024, Special Special launched 4N, a magazine featuring extraordinary foreign talent in America and creative migration around the globe. Special Special continues to develop projects to foster creative communities, and is seeking opportunities for Plant Residencies. From an early age, photography has been a means to record her existence and relationship to her environment. In 2019, Wen-You exhibited her first solo exhibition Rooster Tiger Sheep by Snake of family photographs spanning twelve years at MGM COTAI, Macau, and was accompanied by a photo book of the same title. In 2024 she published Minnan Exit, an archive of photographs from her family funerals in the Minnan Tradition, published by te editions. Her artworks have been exhibited at Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Alisan Fine Arts, Hong Kong, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Xiamen, On Sundays at Watarium, Tokyo, Cafe China, NY, de Gournay NY, among other art and cultural institutions. This exhibition continue Cai’s exploration of art within everyday contexts, blurring the lines between fine art and a manner of living; providing a glimpse into her personal world. The exhibition showcases 20 photographs, each uniquely situated in antique frames collected by Cai over several years. This series builds upon her 2024 exhibition at Cafe China, investigating the recontextualization of images within frames that once housed other visual narratives. These works are reimagined not merely as photographs butas sculptural objects, merging personal documentation with decorative image making. In addition to her photographic series, Cai will debut 30 ceramic pieces produced over the last two years. This marks the first public display of her ceramic work, including a diverse collection of organically handshaped plant pots, vases, platters, and candelabras. Numerous pieces feature coilbuilding fashioned in the style of snakes, along with enlarged wine vessels, encouraging a convivial placement for plants and flowers, as to consider plants with character. Exhibiting her works in the de Gournay context reflects Cai’s ongoing interest in integrating art into daily life, encouraging viewers to appreciate her creations through the lens of lifestyle rather than solely as fine art. On display in the corridor space of Café China is a wall installation that showcases more than 20 photographs arranged in the style of a family photo wall. The display resonates deeply with Wen-You’s perspective on photography: not as an art form, but as an expressive visual record that keeps her memories of time spent with friends and family alive and vivid. It underscores the intimate and personal nature of her photographic work, transforming everyday moments into lasting recollections.In addition to the wall installation, the exhibition extends throughout the restaurant, with pieces seamlessly blending into the environment in unexpected nooks. For instance, the series 4 Bathroom Selfies (2016-21) finds a unique home attached to the mirrors in the restrooms, creating a playful and immersive experience. Similarly, Accidental Infinity Room, Cuba (2015) is featured on a rotating frame shelf and encased in a glass cabinet, inviting viewers to engage with the work from multiple angles. These thoughtful placements further emphasize the fluidity between art and life in Wen-You’s practice, urging visitors to stumble upon and engage with art in unexpected moments while dining.Most of the works by Wen-You on display, embodying a distinctive mix of boldness, whimsicality, and humor, are elegantly framed in vintage pieces from the personal collection of Yiming Wang, co-owner of Café China and co-curator of this exhibition. This collaborative synergy fosters a truly heartfelt and enriching dialogue between two seemingly disparate aesthetics.In crafting the unique interior of Café China, which reflects the vintage allure of 1930s Shanghai, Yiming drew inspiration from Chaoshou Youlang (抄手遊廊)—an architectural feature from traditional Chinese gardens that called for corridors encircling the garden on opposite sides, like hands or arms in an embracing gesture. This idea profoundly influenced the layout of the staircase area and corridor gallery at Café China, blending practicality with artistic expression. The exhibition featured a collection of 176 photographs taken over the span of a decade.&nbsp;The series featured the mundane and momentous occasions of her family, through travel and jet lag, at work, on vacation, and at home. Her younger sister, Wenhao, became a marker of time as she grew up within the images. The series followed these distinct individuals living between harmony and discord in moments of play and occasional ennui, and investigated Wen-You’s spectrum of emotions toward her intimately portrayed subjects.At MGM COTAI, the exhibition featured the collection of photographs in three different sizes, semi-chronologically scattered across a richly royal blue-colored room that was reminiscent of water and floating memories. Along with a pamphlet of captioned narratives associated with each photograph, the audience was able to stumble into various moments in the lives of this one family, sometimes getting a sense of each family member's unique character and other times identifying with them.&nbsp; The exhibition was accompanied by the release of the photo book Rooster, Tiger, Sheep by Snake.&nbsp; The series was later exhibited at 175 Art Space in Quanzhou, China in 2021. The conference call was an ode to the now discontinued Kodak Carousel slide projector, a nostalgic technology of photo sharing, to Zoom, the most prevalent form of communication during Covid, and took viewers on a digital ride that bound together past, present, and future. Amidst the overwhelming grief of losing loved ones, there exists a feeling of confusion, and taking photographs was one of the ways for her to engage in the funeral process. For this photo series, Wen-You was initially confronted by her own fear of death, intertwined with her bewilderment and curiosity about the complex funeral rituals and its uniqueness inherent to Minnan culture. To demystify these subjects, Wen-You, joined by te editions, interviewed a funeral director who provides comprehensive “one-stop service,” a monk who hosts Buddhist ceremonies, and a folklorist of Minnan rituals. Inspired by nostalgia for early millennial internet café culture, Special Special activated the museum with a 2,540-square-foot installation that featured collaborations with artists from around the world. Visitors were encouraged to&nbsp;browse the shelf for a plant that they felt a connection with. They could then name their plant, include their first family photo&nbsp;together, and record the height and weight,&nbsp;along with care instructions. The booklet&nbsp;also includes a note for an emergency contact&nbsp;if lost. The plants were taken home in a fashionable&nbsp;Special Special plant bag.
